What is Hypnobirthing?

Pregnancy is a time of absolute joy, excitement and expectation. Unfortunately, many women also report feeling anxious and fearful of labour and birth. This can lead to unnecessary medical intervention and long-term impacts arising from birth trauma. Hypnobirthing Australia’s positive birth program uses education, relaxation and self-hypnosis to assist you in releasing your fears surrounding birth and building confidence in your natural, instinctual birthing ability.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive impacts of hypnobirthing. Women using hypnobirthing during labour and birth used significantly less amounts of pharmacological pain relief and experienced fewer interventions. Overall, women using hypnobirthing had better outcomes and reported feeling very satisfied with their birth experience.

You will be given the tools to release any fears surrounding labour and an understanding on how to establish a positive mindset. This is a key component for achieving a positive birth. Through the use of affirmations and imagery, you will surround yourself with positive influences, preparing yourself to birth calmly and intuitively.

After completing this course, you and your birth partner will also have an in-depth knowledge of the physiology of birth and how our bodies were perfectly created to birth our babies. We will provide you with information on the stages of labour, optimal baby positioning and breastfeeding. We will discuss basic medical procedures during birth and when to call your care provider. By educating yourself and your partner, you will regain control of your birth and feel confident that you’re making informed decisions.

You will receive education on self-hypnosis and breathing techniques for pain management, both of which have been proven to be effective during labour and birth. This is the ‘hypno’ part of hypnobirthing. Self-hypnosis allows you to increase your state of awareness to connect with your body and surrender to the process of birth. It focuses on deep relaxation which encourages the release of endorphins for natural pain relief.  We use breathing techniques to oxygenate your baby and uterus which allows your muscles to relax and function more effectively.

We focus on light-touch massage and acupressure, which are beneficial during pregnancy, birth and also during the postpartum period.  These tools can aid in relaxation, encourage the release of endorphins, strengthen surges and also provide you with invaluable opportunities to bond with your partner and baby.

Birth partners will also be taught how to support birthing mothers through childbirth and will come to understand the integral role they play in advocating for a positive birth.

The positive birth program is about a positive, calm birth for ALL women and ALL types of births. It doesn’t matter what your birth preferences are, or where you want to give birth, hypnobirthing is for you. Your birth story belongs to you only. So go on……..OWN IT!
